Beginning in 2008, HITS co-developed with the Health Information Management department of Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, the capability to digitize fetal monitor strips with the unprecedented ability to store a continuous digital image of the strip as well as the added feature of being able to print and/or view in a frame by frame method. HITS provides Barnes Jewish with both versions of the file in an industry standard digital format, making the microfilming of fetal monitor strips an obsolete technology. Ease of use and compliance with regulatory requirements is enhanced. The quality of these images far exceeds microfilm, and there is no longer a need to purchase or maintain cumbersome microfilm retrieval equipment. The cost of converting the fetal monitor strips at Barnes Jewish was budget neutral to the microfilming.
